Deanna's August Kit Workshop: Basic Grey doilies and a butterfly effect

This month’s kit, “Tea for two”, comes with the most fabulous papers, and two that I was the most intrigued by were the new Basic Grey doilies. They’re some of the most beautiful papers!

Something that Miss Eva pointed out was that if the green isn’t your thing, then if you flip it over, the back is just as gorgeous as the front! It’s a creamy white, and the edges look as though they’ve been antiqued thanks to the laser cutting’s burnt edging. So in a sense, they’re double-sided!!!

Anyway, I thought I’d combine these two papers and show you a few ways you can use them.

“Seems like Yesterday”

Obviously I used the green doily to “ground” my layers of patterned papers. That’s simple enough. But with the floral doily, I decided to cut out specific flowers and pop them up so they become more of an embellishment than a paper.

I added some pearls from last month’s kit to give them a little oomph!

And lastly, I thought I’d share a little something that I discovered as I was playing with my kit. I knew I wanted to use a butterfly with my page, but then becuase it was pure white, it felt like it was getting “lost”. Soooo, I pulled out my Glimmer Mist, lightly spritzed it, and then immediately dabbed off the excess dye. I was STUNNED with the result! I just thought I’d get a pink butterfly. I had no clue that these little guys have a gorgeous glitter pattern on them that the Glimmer Mist brought out!

I totally recommend doing this! I’m in LOVE with the effect! So pretty, so sparkle-y!

Thrifty Thursday: Making Your Chipboard Shapes S-T-R-E-T-C-H!

This is a really fun, shabby technique. Have you ever bought chipboard shapes and thought to yourself, “I wish there was more than one of this flower?”
Or . . . “I really love this chipboard mini-album, but I just don’t make mini-albums that often.”
Well, then I do have an idea for you!

I received this cute Maya Road flower mini-album in a kit I purchased. I’m not really a mini-album kind of gal, so I decided to use the flowers as accents on my page!

I cut off one sheet from the album and then soaked the chipboard flower in water for a minute.

Next I pulled the layers apart, so I had several flowers. Maya Road album pages are particularly thick, so I was able to get FIVE multi-layered flowers from ONE page!!! WOW!!!
Next I scrunched them up and shaped them and dried them with my heat gun. Here is what they look like.

I painted two of them with White Distress Paint (one is in the top left of the previous photo) and then coated them with a layer of Hi Ho Silver Blingz by Shimmerz.
Layer some other flowers and embellishments on top, and you have a darling flower embellishment for several pages! Yippeee!!! Love that!

And here is my page with my flower accent! Have fun! Just think of the possibilities!!! Cool!

Jana's August Kit Workshop: Using Interior Design as Inspiration

When I’m not scrapping, you can often find me perusing interior design magazines or watching HGTV. Not only do I love the inspiration interior design gives me for my own home, but I LOVE to adapt the ideas I see into my scrapbooking. Let me show you what I mean.

I loved the feeling of this room. The pinks/reds/greens/brown against the cream really caught my eye. I also really loved the type-treatment.

I used a light, creamy colored background for my page, just like the walls in the photo. The Basic Grey striped paper reminded me of the drapes hanging on the windows. I accented the vertical lines in the paper by stitching in between the stripes. I used the yellow/white October Afternoon paper as a grounding layer underneath my photos, just like the sisal area rug on the floor in the picture. I accented this grouping with a bouquet of pink/green flowers like the flowers on the coffee table. I treated my title the same way as the magazine spread, adding a few red letters to my pink title. Finally the red buttons on the flowers add a punch of interest, just like the red painting in the room.

Here’s another example:

First my interior inspiration.

For this page, I used a creamy background again, like the paint in the background of the photo. I loved the way the striped paper met up with the wood floor in the picture, so I did a similar treatment on my page. A striped paper on top and a yellow/white patterned paper on the bottom. I decided to cut the yellow paper in a curve and add the brown cardstock trim by using the curve/color of the shoerack. I lined up my photos side by side, just like the shoes in the picture. I then used blues/green/browns/pinks as my accent colors, just like the colors of the shoes.

Next time you are at a loss for inspiration, try using an photo of an interior as inspiration and see where it leads you!

Technique Tuesday: Paper Lace Border

We are going to make our own paper lace border today …so get out some of your favorite decorative scissors, little punches, and border punches and start playing …..it is a fun way to use up all the little scraps of papers left over in your kit also

First cut out a stripe of paper the size you want to use ….with either the decorative scissors or a border punch …

Then go back and use a small punch and add as much as you want ….

Just have fun with different strips of paper to make this fun lace border ….

Thrifty Thursday: Using Whatever?

Since the beginning of my scrapbooking days I have always tried to be a little different and keep it fun …so I will throw just about anything on a page …so I was about to cut into the new DCWV paper pack “Doodling Around” …and i looked at the front cover and thought ….” I could use that “…..so I started cutting into the chipboard front cover (since it was falling apart anyway) used the letter also and cut the upper right corner circle out too ….. and that is how I was thrifty today …and going a little green also ….

Technique Tuesday: 7.28.09 — Glittered Letters

Glittered Letters

Today’s technique is more of a tip, but one that I LOVE to use. I am a collector of Alphabets, but sometimes I just can’t find the right color! So, instead of running out to buy something new I change the color with glitter. It’s so much fun and so easy!

Find a set of letters that you like the size and shape of. Coat them with a layer of Glossy Accents and then shake on your desired color of glitter. That’s it!

Allow to dry thoroughly and you now have the perfect set!

For this page, I LOVED the size of the letters in the July kit, but I wanted them to show up a bit more against the light background. I chose a light teal blue. I love how the title now stands out subtly against the light patterned paper and the sparkle imitates the water in the photos.

On this next page, I wanted to find letters in the same salmon pink as the background paper. I couldn’t find ANYTHING. So I used a set of hot pink Thickers and shook on some red-orange glitter. It came out as a perfect match! YAY!!! And I didn’t have to buy anything. LOVE that!

So, pull out those glitters next time you are looking to match something on your page and HAVE FUN!

Kristin's Kit Workshop: Keri's Kickin' Tags

One more “Kickin’” way to use Keri’s tags …..I have been looking at some of the trends in scrapbooking right now and it is putting bits & pieces of paper and embellishments around your pictures…so this is what I came up with ….

This is what you need:
July kit
Glimmer Mist

First I pulled out Keri’s tags and cut out the pear and the cherries …and then cut the rest of the tags in 1/2…

Next, I flipped the pear & cherries over and used them as a mask on the top left hand corner of my page and sprayed Glimmer Mist to make a masking effect (sorry for the bad pictures but white on white does not photo well) ..

Finished product:

First I went to picnik.com and played with my picture …had some fun there …thanks Eva!!!

Then I wanted to anchor everything on the page so I added some trim to the top and bottom of my photo to the page and then placed my tags where I wanted them, then distressed them and adhered them down …next I put the little pearls in the circles were the numbers were and added my title …last I scrapped the edges of my layout and added some ink …..thanks for looking!!!!

Thrifty Thursday–die cut negatives

For this Thrifty Thursday, I’m going to share with you a little secret….I don’t throw away stuff I should,
not when I can see it’s potential to be reused. And this is definitely the case when it comes to the negative space
left over from die cuts, chipboard, or stickers. In this instance, I’m going to show you how I reused a die cut
sheet to customize a photo mat.

I started with this die cut sheet from Lily Bee. It’s obviously been used. But I could still see its potential.

Photobucket

The way I decided to use it this time was to make a scalloped photo mat (especially since I don’t have a
Nestibilities system that would make one). So I just made my own.  I traced the scallops onto the CS,
and shortened it so that it’d fit my 4×6 photo instead of being square.

Photobucket

After tracing, I just handcut it out and used as I would any other mat.
And the great thing is, is that I can use these diecut shapes over and over again and adjust them to my needs!
So soooo easy, cost efficient, and “green” too! ;)

Here’s my layout using my thrifty mat. I started out thinking I’d like it in green, but then changed my mind to red.

“Yum!”

Technique Tuesday – popping images

I made a card today with the July kit and thought I would share it with you since it comes with something cool to do on other cards and projects. It’s actually a very simple thing, but very affective and pretty, so it’s worthy to share. What I am talking about is highlighting images, be it a printed image, or stamped image with Clear glitter pen by Sakura making them pop.

So I have a few pictures to show you. I chose to work with one of the pretty images in the July kit by Webster’s Pages.

Than I just outlined the whole image with the clear glitter pen.

I hope you can see the difference, it is kind of hard to take a picture of it, but I tried. Anyway, here is my final card.

And here is another close up.

Hope you like the card and if you don’t have this pen, you better grab it. I know Urban Antholgy has a few of them in stock, you can get them HERE.

Have a great day!

July Kit Workshop – Instant Book – Pam

Once again, I am TOTALLY inspired by the WONDERFUL and ORIGINAL Urban Anthology EXCLUSIVE journaling tags, created by our very own SUPER-TALENTED Ms. Keri (aka Jade)!!

The July kit tags are really something special, and I knew I wanted to do something a bit different than just use them as journaling spaces…

So, I decided to make two items… An instant book AND an ATC (Artist Trading Card defined HERE)

I make instant books with my students, and came across the PERFECT DIRECTIONS in a FAB book about “making books” called, How to Make Books, by Esther K. Smith (illustrations by Lindsay Stadig)… I have scanned and posted the pictoral steps to making a small instant book from an 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheet of paper, below. (Practice with an piece of scrap bond paper BEFORE you make your real book from trimmed patterned paper.)

instant-book-directions

Once you have a “handle” on how to fold the instant book, gather your materials (ATC basics are included below too)

ua-kit-workshop-july-2009

… One piece of patterned paper (trim exactly to 8 1/2″ x 11″),  eight journaling tags from the July kit (I used the nineth for the ATC), straight edge and X-acto (or scissors), gluestick, sewing machine (optional), ATC envelope template (Print directly from Mirkwood Template, onto cardstock.), ATC base paper (3 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ piece of cardstock, or other sturdy base, like chipboard or matboard).

ua-kit-workshop-july-2009-2

Follow pictoral folding directions above, although I tend to use a straightedge and X-acto when cutting the center fold (D)… (I’m better with more precise tools!)
ua-kit-workshop-july-2009-31
Then, orient book so you have a front cover facing you, and use gluestick to add a journaling tag to each panel (Cover – back, 1-8)… For mine, I just glued the center, and machine stitched around the edges of all of the tags. (This is done with the book flattened out, then I fold back to book “shape”.)

Then, you can decorate however you see fit!!… Pictures of both of my pieces follow… Have fun, and consider creating something “off the page”, for a change!!
