Thrifty Thursday: Think Twice Before Purging Patterned Paper

I know, I know! I am ALL for purging and getting rid of that stash that is bogging down our creativity.
But as I was going through my stash a week or so ago, I realized something . . .

I was making a pile of patterned papers to give to my scrapping friends. Papers that I had multiples of, that I had scrapped with already, or that I was just getting tired of.
As I was flipping them over, I had a lightbulb moment! A lot of those patterned papers have SOLID COLOR backsides in incredible colors!!! A lot of them even had a great weathered look “built in”!

I don’t know about you, but cardstock is something I will NEVER purge. I consider it a staple item that never goes out of style.
As I looked at all these pretty colors sitting on the floor, I decided that I would integrate these patterned papers into my cardstock stash according to the solid colors.
Now next time I go to look for a particular color, it will be easy to find.

Save patterned paper from going to waste and look at it in a new light. Make your scrapbooking dollars S-T-R-E-T-C-H! Woo HOOOOOOO!

You’ve seen this page before, but I wanted to show it again, because I used the cream colored “backside” of a piece of American Crafts patterned paper. I love that it has a smooth surface and allowed me to do my stamping/embossing technique, flawlessly. Something I would have fought with on a textured cardstock.

Hope you found this tip helpful! And remember, think twice before you purge that patterned paper!

Technique Tuesday: 9/1/09 — Emboss Resist Technique

What we are going to be doing is creating a watermark look with clear embossing powder and spray ink.

First, gather your supplies. You will need: Smooth cardstock, a background stamp (this one is by Green Grass stamps), watermark ink (like VersaMark), clear embossing powder (mine is by Ranger), a heat gun, paper towels, and spray ink (I am using Bed Of Roses Spritz by Shimmerz)

Stamp your image on your cardstock using watermark ink. I stamped mine twice to create a row of my dot pattern. I wasn’t too concerned about lining up the pattern exactly because I knew I was going to be building my layers on top of the watermark.

While the ink is still wet, pour clear embossing powder onto the stamped image. Shake off the excess and melt the powder using a heat gun. Your paper will look something like this.

Next, spray your ink over the image. The ink will soak into the cardstock, but not into the clear embossed pattern. Use a paper towel to blot the ink off of the clear embossed powder.

You will now have a watermark type image showing through your spray ink.

Build your layout for a really neat look! Page created using the Urban Anthology August Tea for Two kit.
